Equipment List

For the pre-production of the magazine, I created a list of the equipment that I would need. By doing this it meant that I was prepared and organized to carry out the production of my music magazine, I was able to ensure that I had all the software and hardware that was required and make sure that the equipment or venues that were needed were booked in advance.
There was two stages which I needed to consider this was the photo shoot and the editing, for the photo shoot I needed:-

• Digital Camera
• Actors/Actress to pose for the shoot
• Makeup to enhance models features
• Specific clothing which would suit the genre
• Props such as jewelry

There was also a range of software which I used during the production process, this included Photoshop which I used in order to edit my images that I had taken. The reason for editing my pictures was to ensure that they fit in well with the codes and conventions of the genre which I had picked which was R&B. it also gave me the chance to key out the background where needed and try and cover up any mistakes which I had made whilst carrying out the photo shoot- i.e. Equipment left visible in the background of the shoot.
Overall the main purpose of this stage was to make the images look as professional as possible.
The software was very reliable and I found it very easy to use- also due to previous experience. Also I not only used it to edit images but also to edit some parts of the text which I had added onto the front cover in order to make it stand out.

Other software which I used included In-Design which I used to create mockup plans of my magazine; this enabled me to become familiar with the software and the tools which can be used on there. After having a bit of practice and making a few drafts I had then also made my final version of my magazine using In-Design. I thought the software was ideal for the task which I was carrying out and would consider using it again in the future.

I used internet explorer and vibe magazines in order to carry out research to help me put my magazine together.

Double Page Spread

The image displayed above is the original image that was used in my double page spread. As you can see there is a wall in the background and some spots on the models forehead that he wanted to have removed from the image.

As you can see the second image is the one where I have applied effects on the picture. I deleted the wall that was in the background of the image using the ‘Magic Wand’ too and the areas that were harder to get to I used the ‘Lasso’ tool.
To get rid of the blemishes on the models face I used the ‘Clone Stamp Tool’ and the ‘Blur’ tool to try and blend out the spots and give the model a more airbrushed look as it is more professional.

Above is the final version of my double page spread, as you can see I have used the image to dominate the page. The image is aligned toward the left hand side and takes over around ¾ of the page. This is to put the emphasis on the model as I noticed many magazines within this genre tend to have large images with text limited.

As you can see from the expression on the models face he looks very happy and enthusiastic. The colour scheme used consists of orange, black and white; it is simple but playful and reflects well on the models personality.
The white text also stands out on the black backgrounds and I used colour orange very carefully in order to emphasise certain aspects of the magazine, such as there artist’s name.

I also added the name of the music magazine along with the page number on the bottom of each individual page.

Shooting Schedule

In order to keep organised and on the correct time schedule i have created a shooting schedule for my photo shoot which shall be taking place. All members of the team will have this schedule including models, in order to ensure that they know what is going to be happening throughout the day.

1. Everyone shall be meeting in the media department at 12pm- after their lunch break. We shall then be talking through the locations which we are going to be taking the images and the costumes which are going to be used. This should take no longer than ten minutes.

2. Models are to get changed and to have small amounts of make-up applied, this should only take an estimated time of 30 minutes which would then take us into our first shoot of the day. The music studio- within the school grounds.

3. When we arrive at the set location we shall prepare the props which we have arranged such as headphones, microphones and decks. The models will then be giving a rough insight by myself on how to pose, move and the expressions which i am looking for. We shall have a range of close up, mid-shots and long shots during this shoot, but mainly focusing on the close ups. We are aiming to finish the first shoot at around 2pm which would be roughly a one hour shoot in this area.
4. This would lead into our 30minute break where the models can change outfits, have their makeup touched up and pick up any refreshments.

5. After the break and costume change we shall pick up where we left of and move onto the second location for the photo shoot. This would be off school premises at the local park, the second location represents again a more urban environment. The team will be given another briefing on what would be expected modelling wise and the photo shoot should commence at approximately 2.40pm.

6. Again the photo shoot should last around an hour- finishing up at 3.40- giving us 20 minutes for the models to change out of their costumes and make their way home. The transportation for the models in this case won’t be a problem as they are all school students at Heath Park.

Mood Board

I have created a mood board in order to display some of the main codes and convention found within the R&B and Hip Hop genre. By creating this mood board it will help me as I can refer back to the board for ideas. Whether it be ideas of makeup, costume or even props to help with my magazine.

Flat Pans

As you can see from the slideshow above I have created a mock-up of what I would like my magazine to look like. I put together this rough plan and idea after looking into the codes and conventions of a typical R&B magazine.

One of the easiest ways to spot a magazine under the R&B genre would be the images which have been used. After some research into this field, I found that the Hip Hop and R&B genre tended to use sexual exploitation of women to sell there product. This wasn't an idea which I was willing to use and so after further research I had found that other codes and convention had included the image of having money, drugs, flash cars and expensive jewellery- which all indicate some sort of power.
